Portrait Painting Class #8

Today we took a fresh look at our sculptures of noses from last class. Looking again I could see contours I had not recognized before, the bevel of the underside of the tip of the nose, the roller coaster curl of the wing of the nose as it spirals down and back into the nostril, the delicate transition of nose to filtrum! looking so closely, so intently, I have a solid memory of the model's nose and how its cartilage unfurls like a double rose!

After some time to make corrections to our nose studies, we began sculpting the mouth. We had to move fairly quickly because this model would not be back. Blocking in the basic shape of the mouth I had to remember the structure under the lips - how the teeth inform the shape of the mouth, where the eyeteeth are and how swiftly the form of the mouth turns to the back at the location of the eye teeth. I also had to look carefully to capture the shape of the chin, the width and the curves in profile. But the most challenging part was the corners of the mouth! The soft and delicate curves that have so much to do with the personality of the face. The forms were so intricate that I had difficulty modeling the clay with my fingers or even the sculpting tool!

Portrait Painting Class #7

Today we started sculpting a study of the nose from the glabella to the bottom of the upper lip. In other words, the nose in context. The base of the nose to the tip, the angles of the glabella, the width of the nose and the wings of the nose. How the sides of the nose flow into the cheeks. How the cheeks flow down and meet up with the filtrum under the nose. We moved from one side of the model to the other, then to the front, then sitting lower, then standing behind and looking at the model from above.

This is so wonderful! We are learning to know what we are seeing!

Edmonds Art Studio Tour 2008

The tour was great! Despite the damp weather, visitors ventured out on the tour! As always, it was so much fun meeting new and old friends, talking about my work and demonstrating my process.

This year, I did not have a guest artist in my studio but I did have a couple of wonderful friends, Char and Dawn, and my daughter who helped - thanks!

Here is my beloved studio all spruced up for the tour!

Portrait Painting Class #2

We started painting the eyes from a live model. We learned how to judge the value of each "moment" as the forms turned toward the light then away from the light.
Unfortunately, I dropped the wet painting on the ground, then if that wasn't enough, managed to get it stuck to a plastic bag! poor painting!

Here is my homework. Working from magazine photos, trying to get the likeness and the values correct.
